The Ice Waste
Chapter One
The white of the ice and snow stung Eric’s eyes. The wilderness was wild and threatening. Never before had he ventured out on his own. What had driven him on this insane quest was a mystery. It had been a dream. That’s all. In a dream he had heard a voice calling him from across the Ice Waste. That’s what they called it up here, the small family of researchers who called this place home. Their home was Research Base Alpha Zero and it lay at the very heart of the Ice Waste. It was here that Eric had been brought when he was two years old to live with his father who was the chief researcher. His mother had died, and he had had nowhere else to go. He was fifteen now, and had dark hair and dark eyes, just like his father, although his father’s hair had now turned grey and colourless, as if it wished to settle into the surroundings.
Eric was out on his own now, heading for something. He didn’t know what it was, or where he would find it, but it was out there, he knew it was...
