""You don't think I'm stupid do you?". This was the longest conversation Jess had ever had with his dad without arguing.
His dad laughed a bit and he said in a very encouraging sense "Son I thought you were stupid at first, you know with the whole Leslie thing, and now I don't mind, after all it's what you want, right?" Jess gave a weak nod, and to his surprise his dad gave him a hug. Jess hugged him back and they both descended back to the noisy lounge.""

Just as Jess came and plonked himself on the sofa his mum told them that food was ready. While they were eating, the family couldn't stop looking at Jess and Leslie. Jess noticed but Leslie didn't. He actually was smiling. After about ten minutes they all were finished. Jess' mum looked at her watch. She shrieked. "Guys if you want to go to the bank please come now. I'm ready" Jess and Leslie both stood up, and they went out through the door with his mum.
In the car Jess and Leslie couldn't stop laughing. Leslie was also making up her fictional characters while Jess was drawing them. At the end of the car they had both mad an inventive character. They both laughed and laughed like they used to. Jess' mum gave a little smile too. She was glad her son was happy again. Finally they arrived at the bank. Leslie took out a little bank card out of her pocket. Jess smiled. Jess' mum spoke "You guys ready? Well anyway I'm going to the shop at the top of this road. Later we are going to the proper town ok?" They both nodded in excitement and they ran to the bank.
When they were there Jess was just looking around and touching the ornaments there. Leslie on the other hand was being grown up at the counter. About five minutes later Leslie was done.
Jess asked with interest "How much did you get out?"
She smiled "about two hundred." He looked shocked and when they were leaving the shop he muttered under his breath "wow". They looked to the car and Jess' mum was in there. They both went in through different doors of the car and they were ready to go to the town.
With about thirty minutes to go Leslie was sleeping on Jess' shoulder. He was just about to nod off too when he had an idea. He quietly got his art pad out of the chair pocket and he got his pencil. He gently moved Leslie's head to a comfier place of the car. He started to sketch Leslie sleeping. After twenty minutes he had done a very good, detailed sketch of Leslie. He put his art pad down and started to stroke Leslie's hair. That's what Jess' mum could see through the car mirror. And then she realised what Jess' dad realised as well, that he is not a kid anymore. And that he was in love.
Finally after another ten minutes they were in the town.
Jess' mum woke both Jess and Leslie from their sleep. It was eight o’clock of Christmas eve and last minute shoppers were roaming the streets and were also shouting.
Leslie who was obviously thinking fiction again said
"They are hunters, searching for the Terabithians of the kingdom, but the Terabithians are hiding...", what Jess saw was extraordinary, he saw the people like hunters. The three of them dodged the hungry, yet angry crowd and arrived at a little corner shop. It was warm and inviting. Jess' mum realising that Jess had not bought Leslie one single present so far, slipped him fifty pounds. She mouthed "here, nine o'clock" Jess looked amazed, he had already bought his whole family presents and now he had fifty pounds to spend on Leslie. He said to Leslie in hope that she would agree "We should split up and meet at this shop, here," he handed over his old watch from his pocket "remember, come here at nine o'clock" She gave a nod and they both left the shop and went in different directions.
After an hour Jess and his mum both arrived at the little corner shop at quarter past nine, Jess had bought his presents. And so had his mum, but Leslie was nowhere to be found. Jess started to panic. "She must be here!" Jess' mum was a bit in a panic too but she still was calm "Don't worry Jess; it's only quarter past..." He seemed like he didn't take any notice and he went up to the old shopkeeper.
