Jess had spent a year mourning the tragic loss of Leslie, who had fallen into the river of their own imaginary place, Terabithia, while he was praising Mrs Edmunds at the museum. He had been very regretful of his actions and wished he could get Leslie back and tell her how much he missed her.
On a snowy Saturday morning Jess was doodling Leslie and him in Terabithia fighting to what seemed impossible, a piece of cake to him and Leslie, (as it was their imagination after all) and his mum came in looking sorry for him. "Honey", she said, "Leslie's gone", "She would have wanted you to live your life and possibly forget Terabithia".
"No, no, that's it! She wouldn't have wanted me to forget, she would have wanted me to go back and resume our adventure! ...".Jess was starting to make pictures in his head of what he wanted to happen."Look you can't go back, it's crazy! She died out there". She started to make the frown of a normal mum's worry. "She died because I wasn't there! The Terabithians thought they would punish me..."Jess sort of knew this was already deep into his imagination. His mum then added what she thought was right "But she's not there". "She is and I'm going to get her back! Mum I might be a while..." He then ran out of the room, past his shocked and most fearful mum. He went past his rowing sisters, went through the greenhouse and did his quick chore and made a run through the dusty yet snowy road onto the white hills, the bit of the forest and finally to the flooded river. He started to walk across the weary bridge which he made at the end of last year. He looked up at the snapped rope which Jess and Leslie used very gratefully, until the tragedy. He muttered under his breath "I'm coming Leslie" Finally he had arrived in Terabithia.
"Leslie?!, Leslie?!, where are you?" Jess thought he had lost his chances now, so he headed to the rope with a little tear running down his face, and it hit him like lightning. He heard Leslie say: "Close your eyes and keep your mind WIDE open". He had it, anything was possible in Terabithia. Even bringing someone back to life seemed possible. He closed his eyes and opened them again. Nothing seemed to be different, except a voice calling. It sounded as though it needed help.
